COWRIE Offshore Windfarms

Now a registered charity, COWRIE was originally set up by The Crown Estate in order to: ‘advance and improve understanding and knowledge of the potential environmental impacts of offshore windfarm development in UK waters'.

The task

The Crown Estate commissioned e-bloc to design and build a website capable of centralising and disseminating a wide range of research data and reports so that all stakeholders have the necessary information during the planning and building of wind farms around UK shores.

Target audience:

* Energy industry (renewable)
* Environmental agencies
* Wildlife, Marine & fisheries bodies
* Prospective investors
* General public

Now that the project is into its Round 3 phase, the objective of the site will diversify slightly towards education and so e-bloc are currently developing a series of curriculum based e-learning activities for students and tutors.

Outcome

The COWRIE website has achieved its objective of providing accurate non-biased information about the environmental impacts resulting from offshore wind farming and will continue to disseminate future reports as the UK strives to reach its offshore renewable target of 20GW by 2020.

The site is regularly accessed by industry experts across the globe as well as media and education establishments including the National Maritime Museum.
